Durga Temple Medical Clinic (Fairfax, VA)February 20, 2012
Durga Temple is named for the Hindu warrior goddess who is a sort of mother figure, embodying the ability to overcome hardships. Inspired by this figure, the temple community has taken on the responsibility for protecting its congregants on the battlefield of public health.
One Sunday morning per month, doctors, nurses, and other volunteers from the community run a medical clinic in the temple facility. The clients – most of whom are uninsured – have the opportunity to consult with a professional about their ailments or concerns. This service is provided free of charge, with the exception of a nominal fee for a cholesterol check which helps purchase supplies. The clinic is part a larger program of preventative medicine services offered by the Temple, including yoga classes and stress-management workshops.
